Returns the number of characters in a text string

=LEN(text)

LEN syntax and parameters

One argument, one required.

  • textstringRequired

    The text whose length you want to find. Spaces count as characters.

  1. The character count of a product title, for a 60-character limit check:

    =LEN(A2)

    Result38

  2. How many items are in a comma-separated list — count the commas, add one:

    =LEN(A2) - LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A2, ",", "")) + 1

    Result4
