ISNUMBER function in Google Sheets

Checks whether a value is a number.

=ISNUMBER(value)

ISNUMBER syntax and parameters

One argument, one required.

  • valueanyRequired

    The value to be verified as a number. *ISNUMBER returns TRUE if this is a number or a reference to a cell containing a numeric value and FALSE otherwise.

  1. Coerce amounts that were pasted as text:

    =IF(ISNUMBER(C2), C2, VALUE(C2))

    Result1250

  2. The classic contains-text test — SEARCH returns a number or an error:

    =IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("urgent", G2)), "Priority", "Normal")

    Result"Priority"
